Q. What does the Dell Remote Monitoring platform do?
A. Dell delivers IT monitoring and security software designed specifically for the needs of mid-tier organizations and the channel partners that serve this rapidly growing market. We've integrated enterprise-class network, systems, application and security capabilities into one Web-based package that is affordable, deploys in hours, and is easy to maintain and use.
Q. What kind of devices does the Dell Remote Monitoring platform manage?
A. Anything with an IP address – this extends beyond network infrastructure devices to include bank ATM machines; medical equipment; such as X-ray and MRI machines; environmental components, and other "smart" devices. Our pricing is equally easy-to-understand – one device equates to one IP address and we don't charge for multiple interfaces or various types of servers – as do many of our competitors.
Q. Do we have to install agents to use your software?
A. No. The Dell platform is agentless – part of the "fast and easy" value proposition and doesn't require placing any type of software or code on monitored devices.
Q. What kind of security capabilities do you offer?
A.

Dell focuses on internal security protection, including:

  • Firewall monitoring – consolidate the logs into one view; report on intrusion or attack activity; summarize monthly activity, identify if the firewall is operating efficiently.
  • Intrusion monitoring – identify failed log-ins, account modifications, etc. This is the "who did what to whom" feature commonly referred to as an audit trail. Also, document if someone is trying to access a resource he/she shouldn't and help to keep people honest after RIFs or lay-offs.
  • Real-time vulnerability scanning — Scan networks, systems, and applications for more than 2,000 known vulnerabilitie, such as "backdoors", viruses, old software, configuration errors, etc. Also includes nine reports ideal for compliance, including "open ports"; and discovered windows users, services, and shares.
  • Patch management – identify where patches are needed by device, server or desktop, by bulletin or by Microsoft product, such as Internet Explorer, then remotely distribute and install those patches.
Q. What is SilverStreak?
A. SilverStreak is a piece of software code that uses HTTPS to extend the advantages of monitoring to remote sites without a dedicated connection, such as a VPN, or change to the firewall. SilverStreak is NOT a product – rather it is additional functionality incorporated in all Dell Remote Monitoring products.
Q. What are the benefits of SilverStreak?
A. SilverStreak dramatically reduces the service provider's sales cycle in introducing, deploying and upselling managed services to clients. Midtier organizations realize "instant scalability" with the ability to extend monitoring to remote sites without having to make complex operational changes, such as changing each firewall configuration or deploying more pieces of equipment to manage. As an added benefit, SilverStreak reduces the amount of bandwidth required to deliver services to customers or remote sites.
Q. What is SilverStreak Remote Connections?
A. SilverStreak Remote Connections marks a new way of addressing the problem of access to remote devices. Using SilverStreak Remote Connections, a network operator can reach any device – on-demand and without a network connection – in a remote LAN by tunneling TCP/IP traffic through a standard HTTPS connection. Supported protocols include SSH, Telnet, Terminal Services, VNC and other custom traffic. When a Dell-generated alert requires remediation, the network operator or provider can establish an on-demand tunnel and perform remediation – without the need for a VPN or change in firewall.
Q. How does it work with SilverStreak?
A. You must have SilverStreak at the client site on a single Windows system. However, it only requires one SilverStreak Remote Connections at the provider site and can be used across multiple clients and devices to securely perform remediation on-demand.
Q. What are the benefits of SilverStreak Remote Connections?
A. The traditional approach to accessing remote devices frequently includes a cumbersome set-up, changes in firewall configuration, as well as the risk of exposing target devices to the public net. SilverStreak Remote Connections, in contrast, is a secure means of reaching remote devices without the need for firewall changes or a VPN installation. Because it is agentless, you don't need costly software on each targeted device. Moreover, you can access and perform remediation across a wide range of devices such as PCs, routers, firewalls, and UNIX servers, among other infrastructure. Pricing and deployment are by simultaneous connection meaning you can use one SilverStreak Remote Connection to perform remediation on-demand across multiple clients and devices.
Q. How does it compare to VPNs and traditional remote control products?
A. VPNs can be costly in time and resources to set up as well as manage over time. Many clients are also uncomfortable with the VPN approach at their site. Remote control products, while less intrusive, pose a critical security threat in exposing devices to the public net. Moreover, remote control solutions also require the purchase of software at every client site to perform remediation and are frequently limited to desktop diagnosis rather than comprehensive troubleshooting across the infrastructure.
Q. How many devices does SilverStreak support?
A. Each SilverStreak remote deployment supports 100 managed devices for a total of 1,000 managed devices.
Q. What are the minimum requirements for a SilverStreak host?
A. OS: Windows 2000 Professional/Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP Professional.

The SilverStreak host computer must also be running: Microsoft Jet Database 4.0 SP8 or higher, MDAC 2.6 or higher, and .NET Framework Version 2.0 or higher.
