Since the late 1990s the IT industry has been rapidly moving away from agents due to their installation and maintenance costs. This trend has accelerated with the growth of the managed service industry, where these costs can directly inhibit sales and reduce margins. But at the same time, agents have always had one clear advantage over agentless solutions: bandwidth utilization.

Dell has been the pioneer of a new approach to management: distributed agentless. Distributed agentless is the management and monitoring of infrastructures using existing channels already supported by a device, using a local point of presence (what we call a SilverStreak). This allows you to leverage all the benefits of agentless - ease of deployment and maintenance - without any of the bandwidth costs.

By installing a single SilverStreak, you can take advantage of our complete management functionality, including remote access, scripting, patch distribution, file transfer, software distribution, proactive monitoring, and more. Competitive solutions are either entirely agent based, or require different types of agents for different purposes (e.g. one for SNMP monitoring, one for Windows monitoring, one on each device that requires remote access).
