Unlike Windows and Syslog events, thresholds and Windows services, traps have no corresponding Policy Component monitors in the SilverBack managed services platform. That is because devices that send traps are configured to send them to management stations. To monitor traps using SilverBack, those devices must be configured to send their trap messages to the SilverStreak that is managing their parent Management Domain . See your devices' documentation for information about their trap agent configurations.
Once SilverStreak is receiving trap messages you'll need to ensure that alerts are generated upon trap message receipt. You do this using Notification Rules. When you add or edit Notification Rules you can choose which fault sources you want to generate alerts, including traps.
For the purposes of this topic we will assume that you already have an operational Notification Rule , and now you want it to generate alerts for traps.
From the Monitoring category page click on the Browse Notification Rules link to display the Notification Rules report.
Click on the Notification Rule that you wish to edit, and then click on the Edit button to display the Edit Notification Rule form.
You will use the Fault Sources, Assets, Users, Severities and Schedules tabs.
In the Fault Sources tab, click on the Traps checkbox.
Click on the Assets tab, then select the devices from which you want to receive trap alerts by choosing from:
Select All
Select Group
Select Targets
Click on the Severities tab, then select the alert severity level(s) that you want to apply to trap alert notifications. You can choose from:
Critical
Major
Minor
Informational
Click on the Users tab.
Select the users to be notified upon trap alert generation by choosing from:
Select All
Select Targets
Click on the Schedules tab, then choose from:
24x7 - Schedules the Notification Rule to be perpetually enabled. This is the default option.
Customize - Enables you to create a custom schedule.
Click on the Save button.
Now, when SilverStreak receives a trap message the appropriate user(s) will be notified.
