Managing servers is just part of the overall Managed Services equation. By far the largest market in terms of sheer numbers of devices is desktops; and of those, many are mobile laptops issued to "road warriors" working off-site. That presents a real challenge to MSPs: how to manage these portables that may or may not be located in the corporate office at any given time? The answer is SilverStreak Mobile.
SilverStreak Mobile is a small-footprint, client application that enables portable computers to be monitored when the clients are located outside the corporate office. It runs as a Windows Service on the portable client, and directly polls the client. It connects to the SilverBack managed services platform in much the same manner as a standard SilverStreak.
Connectivity to SilverBack could be from a hotel room, conference hall, WiFi hotspot or anyplace from which the portable client can connect to the corporate network. If the portable client resides in a remote Management Domain, then all messages intended for that system are routed directly to SilverStreak Mobile, and not to the SilverStreak which monitors the remote domain.
As with standard Desktop devices, portable clients with SilverStreak Mobile installed are supported by the following SilverBack Policy Components:

One of the following Windows operating systems:
Windows 2000 Professional or Server with any Service Pack (Service Pack 4 recommended)
Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2
Windows Vista
Microsoft .NET 2.0
6.5 MB free disk space (29 MB if .NET 2.0 is included in the installer package)
512 MB RAM
Log into the SilverBack user interface.
From the System category page click on the Create SilverStreak Installer link to display the SilverStreak Installer Generator dialog window.
Select a Management Domain from the Management Domain drop-down.
Select SilverStreak Mobile Installer from the Installer Type drop-down.
If your portables do not have Microsoft .NET 2.0 installed, you can select the Include .Net 2.0 Framework Installer checkbox to include it in the installation package.

Including the .NET 2.0 Framework installer adds about 22.5 MB to the installer package file size. |
The remaining fields become inactive. In addition, the Enable Remote Access Sessions checkbox becomes selected by default and cannot be de-selected.
Click on the Create button to generate the installer. A File Download dialog window appears, in which you can specify the location where you want the generated installer file saved for distribution.
To immediately install SilverStreak or SilverStreak Mobile on the workstation from which you accessed the user interface, click on the Open button.
To save the installer file to a specific location for distribution, click on the Save button. A dialog window appears, which enables you to save the installer file to a location of your choice.
Browse to the desired location, then click on the Save button.
There are three ways to install SilverStreak Mobile, depending upon your requirements.
You can include the generated installer file into a logon script so that SilverStreak Mobile is installed in the background at the next user logon. Ensure that you use the syntax, setup.exe /s, to perform a silent installation.
You can also create a Remote Task to upload and install SilverStreak Mobile on multiple portable computers in one operation. See Install Software on Remote Systems for details.
Otherwise, upload the setup.exe file to the SilverStreak Mobile host system, then double-click on it to launch the installer. Then, follow the prompts in the installation wizard.
